The club’s recently formed Race Squad has got off to an excellent start to the 2018 season with encouraging numbers entering the first two rounds of the Abingdon Winter Crit Series. Held on a closed circuit course at Dalton Airfield Barracks, all races are for 45 minutes, plus 3 laps.
The first event on Saturday February 3rd was held in very wet and windy conditions, with ten members competing across both Cat 3 and 4 events. Five Star riders were in the leading bunch of the Cat 4 race, with Michal Wisowski putting in a very strong performance to score an excellent win, with Lee Heron also finishing in the points with 4th place. Simon Kinsley finished just outside the points in the Cat 3 race.
The second round held last Saturday (10th) saw another ten riders competing and although it was again very windy, the course this time remained dry. Unfortunately three riders suffered mechanical problems, with a well-placed Lee Heron, suffering in particular. However, three Star riders in the Cat 4 race finished in the points; Blaine Carpenter 7th, Gregor Kelling 8th and Chris Bull 10th. Reuben Trotter and Mark Boyles were also in the leading bunch, but just outside the points.
Race captain Mark Boyles said, “It has already been noticed that the club is back racing again and I’m extremely proud of the training put in by everyone and the results already attained by riders who have never competed before. We’ve had to rebuild the racing up from nothing, with a plan of training and development over the winter with race specific training sessions, turbo training events and race craft lessons.”
The next race in the series is on 24th February.
