Mixed fortunes for two Stars racing mid-week

Two Star riders, Mike Gillett and Tobi Ng, went racing during the week at Milton Keynes Bowl with mixed results.

Mike Gillett raced on Wednesday afternoon in the Royal British Legion League, a Cat. 4 race series which is run every fortnight, comprising 45 minutes, plus 3 laps of the Bowl circuit. This was Mike’s first race of the year and he used the occasion to test his winter training.

The start line was filled with Vector RT jerseys followed by RAF and Army teams. Team Vector controlled the race, closing every breakaway within 2 laps of the finish. Mike initially stayed at the back and enjoyed a manageable pace, until a bout of hay fever forced his retirement. A bunch sprint at the end with a crash amongst the lead riders in the final chicane made it anyone’s race.

Meanwhile on Thursday night, Tobi Ng enjoyed a much better evening at the Bowl, taking a great second place and a haul of valuable first points towards his licence progression.

Tobi competed in round 3 of the popular Cat. 4, Corley Cycles organised summer series. He was not sure what to expect from the 25 rider event, which lasted for 45 minutes, plus 5 laps, a distance of around 40km.

In wet, but drying conditions, the race started at a fairly relaxed pace, probably as a result Tobi felt, of so many new riders competing. He put in an attack to try and up the pace of the race and the field began to respond. About midway through the race the pack caught up to the women’s race when someone decided to attack around them and go for it solo. Tobi decided to stick with the bunch in order to get some points and not risk blowing up. The pace in the bunch never really increased until around 5 laps to go. The final sprint finish was uphill so he decided to go slightly early from the back of the group. As a result he caught most people by surprise, wining the bunch sprint and taking second behind the solo breakaway rider, Alec Bond (Mid Shropshire Wheelers).
