The widely-anticipated 2017 time trial season kicked off yesterday with a 5 mile “come and try it” event on the K4/5 course from Gaydon to Kineton and back.
The entry list of 32 riders, which represented a 20% increase compared to the same event in 2016, gathered under dark skies and cool conditions (it is still March) by the roadside in Gaydon awaiting their starting times. The first 200m was an uphill ramp to a roundabout where a left turn was made and into a gusty headwind which was stronger than many anticipated.
From Gaydon, the road followed a gently twisting course which allowed the rider’s minute-man to remain out of sight and no doubt helped by the wind which kept speeds down and pulses raised. At Kineton a u-turn was performed at the new roundabout where an ally was found with the wind now at one’s tail. The return leg retraced the route back to the B4100 at Gaydon with the finish at the top of another short ramp.
The wind and winter training helped to contribute to many personal bests for this course, and after a bit of number crunching the top three finishers were announced:
1. Billy Leason 10m37s P/B
2. Cameron Foster 10m58 P/B
3. Simon Kisley 11m27s P/B
