Eric Smith

It’s with the greatest regret that we pass on the news about the recent death of another of Banbury Star’s stalwart members.

At 85, Eric Smith was our oldest member and remained active on his bike until recently. In his time, Eric was a prodigious rider and remains the holder of the club record for the Banbury to Reading and back 100 mile event which he set in January 1952, achieving a time of 4h26m.

His last ride with the club was on our 125th anniversary ride from Banbury out to Middleton Cheney, he was very proud to be able to take part in this event and also to have one of the anniversary jerseys.

The funeral service for Eric will take place at All Saints Church, Middleton Cheney, on Friday 19th May at 10.45 am, and there will be refreshments afterwards at the Cherwell Edge Golf Club to which members are welcome to attend.

The collection at Eric’s funeral service is for Wheels for Wellbeing, a charity that helps disabled people to enjoy the benefits of cycling. For more information, see:
