Banbury Star CC’s annual Hilly 15 time trial is one of the toughest events on the club’s summer evening calendar and when it coincides with one of the warmest days, the challenge becomes even harder. However, this didn’t deter 25 riders turning up to take on the 2 lap, 15 mile course, which starts and finishes at the top of Warmington Hill and climbs the infamous Edge Hill twice.
It’s also an event which attracts some very good TT riders from visiting local clubs, which is reflected in the results and the closeness of times. However, it was again a very on form Jon Simpkins (Drag2Zero) who set the fastest time of 36.52, just 12 seconds off the course record he set last year. In second place was Tobias Wiesand, 66 seconds behind, who was just 16 seconds ahead of Henry Sleight in third.
Jon Simpkins and Naomi de Pennington climbing Edge Hill
The battle amongst the women was particularly strong with Naomi de Pennington setting a time of 45.38, just 3 seconds ahead of Jess Sleight. Whilst she was 9 seconds behind Jess after her first lap, a strong and faster second lap by Naomi also saw her break her existing course record by a huge 47 seconds. This is an amazing achievement as she broke her ankle and dislocated her collarbone in a crash just over six weeks ago.
