Isabella Boyles, James Rutledge and Edgar Dumbreck competed in a Central CX League event on Saturday, organised by Team MK at Milton Keynes Bowl. Isabella, who has now ridden a couple of cyclocross races, was joined by first timer Edgar in the Under 12 event, whilst James competed in the Under 10s. There were also categories for Under 8s and Youth U14 and U16s.
The U12 start and Isabella, James and Edgar
Cyclocross is a great way for kids to get into cycle racing, with safe off-road courses, held largely on grass. The event was well organised with chip timing, the atmosphere was very friendly and everyone got the chance to ride the course before the race. This particular event was part of the Central CX League series, which meant a large competitive field in all categories with some very strong and already experienced young riders, nearly all on proper cyclocross bikes.
At only 10, Isabella and Edgar were amongst the youngest in their U12 group and given their inexperience, both put on a great performance, particularly as they were required to start from the back. Their race lasted 15 minutes, which comprised around six laps of the course, whilst James’ U10 race lasted 10 minutes.
Whilst this particular event was tough and competitive, all three seemed to enjoy themselves. Other, perhaps less challenging, events are held locally throughout the winter season and the club will try and keep members informed of these via the Rising Stars Facebook page.
