A great Wednesday TT – warm night, large quality entry and fast times

When you get a lovely warm evening, a return to the club’s favourite 20km course and another appearance of course record holder Charlie Quarteman a large entry of 49 eager riders was always on the cards. Charlie was recently crowned Under 23 National Time Trial Champion, so everyone was wondering how close he could get to his amazing 24.42 record he set with Dan Bigham back in May.

However, whilst he set off at a fast pace, a breakage to his aero bars at Edgehill slowed him, yet he still managed to “limp” home in a sub 30 minute time of 29.18. Fast times were still the order of the night with ten riders getting below the 30 minute mark.

Overall times were close, with regular visitor Jon Simpkins winning again on 27.29, just 12 seconds ahead of first club member Simon Smart, who was a further 52 seconds ahead of third place Dan Chambers. The club continues to attract lots of visiting riders and Dan was one of three on the night from nearby AMG/Mercedes.

Winners on the night – Jon Simpkins and Lydia Watts

Twelve women took part on the night and for the first time in a long while the club’s three fastest took part together, setting some very competitive times. Second claim member Lydia Watts made a welcome return visit, taking the honours with a time of 31.24, followed by Naomi de Pennington on 31.55 and Suzy Patience on 32.58. Special mention should go to the winner’s young daughter and new club member Peggy Simpkins who managed an impressive sub 40 minute time of 38.52.
