Cyclo-cross is back and Star juniors are in action

Cyclo-cross is currently enjoying an increase in popularity – it’s a great first step into cycling competition – particularly for juniors with its safe off-road courses. With the easing of lockdown cyclo-cross events are now restarting and the first local one was held near Worcester on Sunday.

Three Star members made the trip, with Rich Baker taking part in the Senior Men’s race, while 8 year old Henry Boyles and 7 year old Caleb Smith took part in the Under 8s race.

Henry tackles a climb with Caleb right on his wheel

The U8s raced for a duration of 15 minutes, which equated to 4 laps of the challenging course. Henry was stronger on the fast flat sections, but Caleb had the technical edge on the ramps and dismounts. They traded places all the way round with Caleb pipping Henry on last technical ramp before the finish. Caleb came home 5th, with Henry 6th, just a few seconds off his wheel.

There are a number of other local cyclo-cross coming up in the next few months, including a series based at Milton Keynes Bowl, plus another visit to Worcester. Keep your eyes on Facebook for more information.
